Uniform tax rebate: who qualifies and how to claim
HMRC's flat-rate uniform allowance fully explained — eligible jobs, rates by occupation, what the relief is really worth, four-year backdating and the free P87 claim.
If you wear a uniform or specialist clothing for work and you're the one washing, repairing or replacing it, HMRC gives you a fixed annual tax relief called a flat-rate expense. It's small per year — which is exactly why most people never claim it, and why four years of it makes a satisfying cheque. Here's the complete picture: who qualifies, the rates, the real cash value, and the free five-minute claim.
What counts as a "uniform" for tax purposes
HMRC's test is stricter than everyday language. Qualifying clothing is either:
- A recognisable uniform that identifies your occupation and that you'd be embarrassed to wear outside work — nurse's tunic, police-style kit, branded fast-food polo, airline crew wear
- Protective or specialist clothing needed for the job itself — hi-vis, safety boots, overalls, chef's whites, a masseuse's tunic
Not qualifying: anything you could plausibly wear off-shift. Black trousers and a plain shirt fail even if your contract demands them — the entire wardrobe industry of "office dress codes" is excluded, no matter how expensive.
The three eligibility tests
All three must hold in each tax year you claim:
- Your job requires the uniform (not merely permits it)
- You maintain it yourself — no employer laundry, no reimbursement
- You paid income tax that year — relief is given by reducing taxable income, so non-taxpayers have no tax to relieve
Part-time and multiple employers both work fine; the flat rate is per person, not per job.
The flat rates, by occupation
HMRC negotiates specific rates with industries, so no receipts are ever needed. The standard fallback rate where no agreement exists is £60 a year. The published scale runs much higher for many roles (examples):
| Occupation | Flat rate per year |
|---|---|
| Nurses and midwives | £125 |
| Ambulance staff (active duties) | £185 |
| Healthcare staff, many roles | £80–£125 |
| Catering — chefs, some hotel staff | £80–£125 |
| Uniformed airline crew | £720 |
| Police officers | £140 |
| Firefighters | £80 |
| Mechanics (via tools allowance) | £120 |
| Standard / unlisted | £60 |
The full occupation list lives on GOV.UK — check your exact job title; two similar roles can sit pounds apart.
What the relief is actually worth — do this sum once
This is where advertising goes dishonest, so be precise. You do not get the flat rate back. You get the tax on it:
| Your tax band | £60 flat rate gives you | £125 flat rate gives you |
|---|---|---|
| Basic rate (20%) | £12 a year | £25 a year |
| Higher rate (40%) | £24 a year | £50 a year |
| Scottish higher (42%) | £25.20 a year | £52.50 a year |
Pocket change per year — but claims run four tax years back, and most claimants stack this with professional fees and other reliefs on the same form. Four years of a nurse's £125 at basic rate is £100 claimed in one submission.
Actual costs instead of the flat rate
Spend provably more than the flat rate on maintaining your kit? You can claim the real cost — with evidence: receipts, bank statements, a credible log. You cannot claim both routes for the same spending, so compare first. Flat rate wins for convenience; actual costs win for people who genuinely burn through heavy kit.
After the first claim: it becomes automatic
HMRC usually adds an approved flat-rate expense into your tax code — your monthly pay simply gets a little more tax-free allowance from then on, no annual re-filing. Check each April's coding notice; if it vanishes (job change resets happen), reclaim.
The combination claims nobody makes
Same workday costs frequently stack legitimately, all on one P87:
- Uniform maintenance — this relief
- Professional fees and registrations — NMC, HCPC, teaching unions (see our professional fees guide)
- Tools and equipment you must supply for the job
- Business mileage in your own vehicle to temporary sites
A nurse claiming uniform + NMC fee + occasional mileage can legitimately reclaim a few hundred pounds across four years — every pound of it claimable in one free evening.
